고압 스틸탱크(HP Steel cylinder)의 불편한 진실

HP_LP 스틸탱크의 장점은 알루미늄 탱크보다 많은 공기를 담을 수 있고, 탱크가 비었을때 양성부력이 덜 하다는 겁니다.
스틸탱크도 HP(High Pressure)와 LP(Low Pressure) 두종류가 있습니다.
일반적으로 HP탱크가 고압 탱크니까 저압인 LP보다 더 많이 들어간다고 알고 있습니다.
하지만 이는 잘못 알고 있는 사실입니다.
같은 탱크인데 고압으로 충전을 하니 당연히 더 많은 공기가 들어갈 것이라는 단순한 생각에서 오는 오류입니다.
물론 다양한 탱크를 경험하지 못해서 오는 것이니 어쩔 수 없는 부분이기도 합니다.

용량이 12.7리터짜리 HP와 13리터 LP 스틸탱크를 비교해 보겠습니다.

13리터 스틸탱크의 일반적인 제품은 HP가 100CuFt(Water Capacity 12.7리터) 이고 LP는 85CuFt(Water Capacity 13리터) 입니다.

HP는 3,442Psi(약 237Bar)에서 12.7리터, 100CuFt가 충전됩니다.
LP는 2,640Psi(약 182Bar)에서 13리터, 85CuFt가 충전됩니다.

HP탱크를 2,640psi로 충전하면 76.70CuFt가 충전이 되고,
LP탱크를 3,442psi로 충전하면 110.82CuFt가 충전이 됩니다.

그럼 똑같이 3,442psi(약 237Bar)로 충전하면 어떨까요?
HP탱크는 3,442psi로 충전하면 100CuFt가 충전이 되지만, LP탱크는 3,442psi로 충전하면 112.68CuFt가 충전이 됩니다.
이는 CuFt/PSI에서 LP탱크가 우위에 있음을 말해주는 것이고, 곧 공기를 채울수 있는 양의 차이를 얘기해 주는 겁니다.

그래서 케이브다이빙에서는 더 많은 공기를 가져가기 위해 LP탱크를 주로 사용합니다.

Cave Fill이라고 해서 LP탱크에 3,500Psi(약 241Bar)를 충전해서 사용한다고 하니 LP탱크의 마법이기도 합니다.

Low pressure versus high pressure explained

Lots of myths float around out there about the merits of low pressure versus high pressure cylinders, and how much gas they hold respectively.

How much gas a cylinder will hold boils down to 2 things – the actual volume of the tank, sometimes referred to the liquid volume, and the gas pressure in the tank.

Let’s take an example:

A Worthington X7-100 is a steel high pressure tank. It is 24 inches tall, 7.25 inches in diameter, and it’s liquid volume is about 12 liters, depending on who measures it. (You’ll find there is a lot of tolerance allowed between the various manufacturers when it comes to actual measurement.) Since we can’t alter the inside dimensions of a steel tank the only variable on how much gas it holds is the pressure of the gas inside.

The service pressure of the X7-100 is 3442PSI. So this means, if we fill this cylinder to 3442 psi, it will have inside, 100 cubic feet of gas. If we were to fill it to 2640 PSI it would hold 76 cubic feet of gas.

Let’s compare this to a Worthington LP-85, which is 26 inches tall, and 7 inches in diameter, with an internal volume of 13 liters. This cylinder is rated to 2640 psi, meaning it holds 85 cubic feet at this rated pressure. You’ll note that the size and internal volume is similar to the X7-100, and at 2640 PSI, both cylinders hold a similar amount of gas. If you were to over fill the LP85 to 3442 PSI, (don’t do this) it would hold 110 cubic feet of gas.
